Tony Baxter joined Walt Disney Imagineering when he was 22 years old and is among the first of a second generation of Disney creatives who fashioned the magic found today in Disney parks worldwide. He would stay with the company for nearly 50 years and today serves as a mentor and consultant to the new, younger generation of Imagineers.

Tony is credited for helping create such Disney attraction icons as Star Tours, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, and the Indiana Jones Adventure. He has been lauded for his creative leadership at Disneyland Paris Resort, is a Disney Legend and has a personalized window on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland Park, considered by many to be one of the highest honors a Disney employee can achieve.

From ice cream scooper in 1965 to Senior Vice President of Creative Development in 2013, this is his story.

Tony is more than a Disney Legend, he is an "original". You are hearing an employee tell a workplace story, yet Tony never did a day of "work", it was always a "labor of love" fueled by his passion for the essence of Disney and "pushing the envelope". As with love, comes occasional pain and ectasy and he gets into that. To make those "magic" breakthroughs you have to first face forces that resist you and he was relentless. To that extent, hearing him tell the WED story from his unique perspective is something even his coworkers (like me) will enjoy as he relates the highs, the lows, the who's and the why's as only he can. Recommend, and if I know Tony, he'll have more to say :-)

I so looked forward to Tony's book and was not disappointed. I had the great honor of working with Tony during one of the rehabs at 20,000 leagues under the sea back in 1975-76. He impressed me then with his love of Disney and his creativity. His book really captured Tony's philosophy about Disney and why he is the creative guy he is. The book also talked about folks I have met, worked with or know of in my travels through the Disney environment over the last 45 years. It was like a class reunion.

Read this one in about three nights. Pretty short for a more pricey Disney biography vs. the typical Theme Park Press ones that are put out pretty frequently. As a long time Disney theme park history buff, not much new here. I was expecting more in depth stories about the creation of his projects and the ones that never came to be. I would recommend this book for those not that familiar with Mr. Baxter's work, everyone else, I would honestly skip it. I've already read all the same Big Thunder and Star Tours stories. I wanted more in depth info on his input on Disneyland Paris, which is very high level in this book. There are several pictures with his mentor I don't really remember reading much about.

Nice overview of Tony Baxter's career at Disney. I'm hoping Mr. O'Brien will use it to write a more in depth study. I want to see between the ears and behind the eyes to find out more about the person who is Tony Baxter, his creative process, Imagineering and the industry of attraction design. Mr. O'Brien's book about George Millay, who created Sea World, shows what he is capable of.
